Objectively Assessing Your Team

*team Sep 27, 2022

The #1 concern we receive questions about at CourageToLead, hands-down, has to do with the team. That is, people…

And, one of the BEST things you can do in order to build a great team is to accurately assess where your team is NOW.

(Think about it: knowing where you are NOW is the only way to navigate to where you want to be.)

And that requires objectivity.

Here’s why objectivity matters. A professional recruiter reports that—

  •  46% of new employees fail within the first 18 months
  •  Only 18-19% achieve success

Oddly enough, in most of these cases the technical skills to do the job (the ability to execute the role) wasn’t the issue.

  • About 25% drop out because of “soft skills” required to get along with others in a work environment (i.e., emotional wholeness)
  • Others can’t handle feedback
  • Some are unable to manage their emotions
  • A few lack motivation to excel, and simply punch in and punch out each day

Sounds abysmal doesn’t, it?!

(And these stats are from a professional hirer!)

Here are four ways to objectively assess your team. We discusses these regularly, so you’ll hear about them again!

You’ve likely heard a derivative of each of these four at some point in the past.

If you want to objectively assess your team, rate EACH of your key leaders. Rank each of them on a scale of 1-10 in each area (not against each other, but on the same scale).

Then look at their total score.

  •  How close are they to 40?
  •  Are there areas which are radically low while others seem incredibly high?

The mistake comes when we overemphasize one at the neglect of the others…

  •  They have low CHARACTER, but we overlook it because they have massive CAPACITY
  •  They have lower CAPACITY, but they’re really kind (CHARACTER)

Each of these four are equally important.
